Those we serve

Pui Tak Center primarily serves Chinese who live in Chicago’s greater Chinatown community (Armour Square, Bridgeport, McKinley Park, Brighton Park). According to the U.S. Census figures for this area, the community has been growing - from 11,978 Chinese in 1990, 17,934 in 2000, 26,195 in 2010 and 35,009 in 2020.

The community is growing due to continuing immigration from China along with more community residents staying in the area rather than moving to the suburbs compared to the past. While immigrants come with different levels of English and work skills, there are many who have limited income as they don’t have the English skills needed to re-enter their past occupations and work long hours in entry level jobs when they initially arrive.

Is Pui Tak Center the same organization as Pui Tak Christian School?

The Chinese Christian Union Church started Pui Tak Christian School in 1953 and the Pui Tak Center in 1994. After the Pui Tak Center was started, the school operated as one of Pui Tak Center’s programs. As the school had grown to offer classes from preschool to eighth grade, Pui Tak Christian School became a separate charitable non-profit organization in July 2017. While we continue to coordinate our services, donations for the school should be sent directly to PTCS.

What other organizations serve the Chinatown community?

There are many organizations serving various needs of the community including: Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, Chinese American Service League, Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, Midwest Asian Health Association, Project: VISION and Xilin Association. The Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community seeks to engage residents in civic engagement and advocates for the collective needs of Chinatown. The Chinese American Museum of Chicago, located at 238 W. 23rd Street, is a great place to learn about our community’s history.
